Rejoice my fellow book nerds, we’re about to explore some of the greatest pieces of literature ever created! I am currently attempting to read the entirety of George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy series ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire‘ and let me tell you: it’s a mental marathon. The word count for the shortest in the series A Game Of Thrones still exceeds 298,000 words: longer than any of The Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter books. In fact, according to this infographic from Cartridge Discount – which is seriously lacking some Stephen King, am I right? – the longest Harry Potter book is The Order Of The Phoenix at just over 257,000 words. Interestingly, Shakespeare’s longest piece was Hamlet at approximately 30,000 where as Jane Austen’s novels often never fell below 100,000 words. It’s incredible how writers can create an entire life, an entire world even, in such drastically differing numbers of words. Who’s your favourite writer and what’s your favourite book?
